Morning departure, drive west past Reims and Paris. Upon afternoon arrival at Caen we’ll visit the Memorial Museum to introduce us to the events of D-Day and the summer of 1944. Then we check into our hotel. Dinner at hotel restaurant.
After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, we will discover two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: In Bayeux, view the famous tapestry. It is 230 feet long and over 900 years old. Millions of stitches tell the story of the Norman Conquest of England. After lunch (not included), we will discover one of France’s most stunning attractions: The Mont Saint-Michel. A promontory just off the Atlantic shore, it is one of the most recognizable landmarks of France. Begun in 966 AD it became one of Europe’s major pilgrimage destinations. Dinner at hotel restaurant.
We begin the day at Utah Beach with it’s sand dunes and shallow waters. View the memorial and the remains of German bunkers along the beach. Drive to St Mère Eglise, time to visit the Airborne Museum. After lunch, we’re off to Hoc Peak, an impressive stronghold of Hitler’s “Atlantic Wall.” Driving along “bloody” Omaha Beach, we stop at the memorial sites and walk along the beaches where the heaviest D-Day casualties were incurred. We will visit the American National Cemetery at Omaha Beach - pay your respect to the soldiers who fell for the liberation of Europe. On Memorial Day we will attend the ceremony. Tonight, join our Norman gourmet dinner at the fishing village of Courseulles sur Mer.
After breakfast and check out we are off to Benouville where we view the legendary Pegasus Bridge. Evening return.
