Our magical day exploring the Mosel region begins in the town of Idar Oberstein, world famous for the stunning colored and fine cut gems produced here for over 200 years. Here, we will take a guided tour into the heart of a fascinating Gemstone mine, into the beautiful fairy tale caves where amethysts, calcites and quartz glitter along the stone walls and crystal clear pools of water reflect the natural beauty of the caves. This fascinating underground journey provides a glimpse into the world of crystals, the mining industry and what it takes to bring a raw stone to market as a shimmering jewel. After seeing the mine, there will be an opportunity to shop for gems at the souvenir shop before we begin the journey north, across the Hunsrück mountains.
Our next destination is Trier, founded in 16 BC, offers more ancient roman monuments than any other city north of the Alps. Here, you will have the opportunity to journey back to a time when the Roman empire dominated most of Europe. Our time here will begin with a guided tour of the Roman Amphitheater followed by a visit to the Imperial Baths, 4th century cathedral and end at the famous Porta Nigra. After being introduced to these fascinating sites, there will be free time for you to explore the city center, shop for ancient bargains on authentic roman coins and other souvenirs, or stop for lunch at one of the local restaurants.
Next, we enjoy a relaxing scenic drive through this regions wine country, along the Mosel River, winding below the steep hillsides, all abundantly adorned in rows of carefully tended grape vines. Our final destination is the quaint wine village of Bernkastel-Kues, famous for the incredible Riesling wine that has been lovingly produced here by generations of family run vineyards for centuries. Upon arrival we will have an orientation tour of the town followed by free time where you will be able explore on your own, sample the local wines and make purchases for your wine collection.
